Of course, you can’t use a name that is already being used but you will be prompted to try something different if this is the case.

As soon as you are finished, click ‘save changes’ and you will have a completely new Twitter name. If you didn’t want to change your username but instead your personal name next to it, just click on your profile and click ‘edit profile’; from here, you will have the ability to change your profile picture, your header, and your personal name.
